He departed Melbourne for England on Nov. 23, 1916, on board the Hororata, and then joined the war effort in France on May 9, 1917. He received a gunshot wound that resulted in a severely fractured right arm on Oct. 9, 1917. He spent a few months in hospital recuperating in England and returned to Australia on Mar. 12, 1918, for eventual discharge on Jul. 4, 1918.
