HARRY ANHEIER DIES AT CHICAGO
Monticello Native Once Secret Service Boss
MONTICELLO--Harry D. Anheier, of Chicago, native of Monticello, passed away Tuesday morning at 7:05 o'clock at the Louis Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He had undergone surgery July 3rd.
Funeral services will probably be held in Chicago with burial in Riverview cemetery at Monticello in the family lot.
A year ago, he had been appointed chief investigator of the Illinois State Attorney's office in Chicago, which position he had resigned last May because of his health.
Anheier, 59, had formerly been with the U.S. Secret Service since 1933 and since 1945 special agent in charge of the Chicago Secret Service office.
A graduate of the Monticello high school, he served during World War I with Battery C. 137th F.A. After the war he became associated with the Internal Revenue in 1928 and later with the Secret Service in 1937 which he served for 28 years.
On numerous occasions, he directed the personal protection of high dignitaries of the government, included President Eisenhower, former Presidents Truman and Roosevelt, and during World War II, Princess Martha of Norway, and Prime Ministers Churchill and Attlee of England. He has directed investigations in which more than half a million dollars was seized, and another investigation in 1952 involving 3 million dollars of counterfeit money.
Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Price of Monticello; two sons, John A., 19, and Harry D., Jr., 12; and two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Steinke of Monticello, and Miss Ruth Anheier of Chicago. Attorney Glenn R. Slenker of Monticello is a brother-in-law.
