Thomas's father was also Thomas Murray. Thomas Murray, Sr., was born in 1776. He died at the tender age of 21 years on May 3, 1797, 4 months and 2 days after he married Sarah Lowell Hazen (born 1775), daughter of William Hazen, on January 1, 1997. Thomas was the son of John Murray and Deborah Brinley, his third wife. Thomas, Jr., was raised by Sarah, his mother, and his stepfather, Judge William Botsford. The following passage in Dr. Botsford's memoir was written about Ellen Murray's father and mother: "Murray returned occasionally to Westcock to see his mother and to be the wonder and admiration of his younger brothers, for the pretty boy had become a handsome young fellow, with the courtly grace and debonnair manner of his grandfather, the old Colonel. Murray married in Halifax, a Miss Despard, the daughter of an English officer. He soon showed symptoms of his father's delicacy of constitution, and, after spending two years in Italy, he died in early manhood, leaving a widow and three little girls." The three little girles were Ellen, Frances Elizabeth, and Harriet W.
