U.S. Congressman. He was a paper manufacturer and a long time member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives serving from 1806 to1808. Elected to the United States 13th Congress, he served from 1813 to 1818 and again from 1822 to 1829. President Andrew Jackson, appointed him the 9th Secretary of the Treasury, serving in post from March 6, 1829 and resigning on June 21, 1831. After his resignation from the United States Treasury, he resumed the manufacture of paper and engaged in the development of anthracite coal until his death. The United States Coast Guard Cutter Ingham, was named in his honor on September 12, 1936 and decomissioned on May 27, 1988. The ship is now at Truman Waterfront, Key West Florida as a museum. Ingham County, Michigan (home of the state capital, Lansing) is named after him.
