Daniel Wade McElwee, 80, a retired computer-company manager, civic activist, and decorated Army colonel who served in three wars, died Monday of pneumonia at Bellingham, a retirement community in West Chester.

Col. McElwee grew up in Merion. He graduated from St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia and earned a bachelor's degree in physics and electrical engineering from St. Joseph's University.

During World War II he served in the Army in the Pacific, and after the war he remained in the military for more than 20 years.

"I once counted up that my father had been assigned to 26 bases in the United States and overseas," his son Brian said.

In 1951 Col. McElwee was assigned to the nuclear weapons-testing project at Enewetak in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. He was a signal officer in Korea during the conflict in that country, and in 1968 he commanded the 21st Signal Group in Vietnam.

Among the military honors he received were the Bronze Star Medal for valor, the Purple Heart, and the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters.

While in the Army Col. McElwee did graduate studies at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and earned a master's degree in international studies from George Washington University. He was a lecturer at American University.

After retiring from the military in 1969, he was a manager of the Eastern Technical and Training Center at the former Burroughs Corp. in Paoli. He retired from his civilian position in 1986.

Col. McElwee had lived in Hershey Mills in West Chester since 1994. He previously lived for 24 years in Villanova.

A community activist, he was past president of the Ashwood Manor Civic Association in Villanova and was a former chairman of the Zoning Hearing Board of Radnor Township. He also served on the Radnor Township Planning Committee and was government-study commissioner and secretary of the Home Rule Charter Advisory Committee.

He was a member of the parish council of St. Thomas of Villanova Church.

His wife, Elizabeth Murphy McElwee, to whom he was married for 36 years, died in 1985.

In 1992 he married Barbara Johnston McElwee. She died in 2000.

In addition to his son Brian, he is also survived by sons Daniel Jr., John, and Michael; two sisters; a brother; and five grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. today at St. Thomas of Villanova Church on the Villanova University campus.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
