Assistant Adjutant General, Vermont National Guard. President, Vermont Bar Association. Son of Leonard Wing, Sr., Major General Commanding 43rd Division, WW II. Graduate, Rutland High School. Enrolled at Norwich University. College's entire cadet corps activated for service in World War II, April 1943. Commissioned Second Lieutenant, 84th Division. Deployed to Europe. Wounded and taken prisoner, Thanksgiving, 1944. Escaped from Germans, January, 1945. With help of Polish Underground made way to Russia, and then Egypt, from where he returned to US. Returned to Norwich, 1946, completed junior year. In 1947 married Mary Evelyn Costello of Rutland, who survived him. Enrolled in Boston University Law School. Graduate, 1950. Activated for federal service with 43rd Division during Korean War, June, 1950. Served in Europe until unit was demobilized, September, 1952. Rejoined National Guard, attaining the rank of Brigadier General and serving as Commander, 86th Armored Brigade, Assistant Division Commander, 50th Armored Division, and Assistant Adjutant General. Retired from military, 1973. Awards include Silver Star, Bronze Star with "V" device, Combat Infantry Badge and Purple Heart. Beginning in 1952 practiced law for over 40 years with Ryan Smith and Carbine, firm originally established by father as Fenton, Wing and Morse. Member, Board of Fellows, Norwich University. Bachelor of Arts, Norwich University, 1980. President, Vermont Bar Association, 1984-85. Director, First Vermont Bank and Trust Company and First Vermont Financial Corporation. President, Rutland City School Board. Founding organizer and President, Havenwood School for Retarded Children. President, Rutland Association for Retarded Citizens. President, Vermont Association of the Retarded. Director, Parents Association, Brandon Training School. Chairman, Board of Trustees, College of St. Joseph. Member, Elks, Moose, American Legion, VFW and Knights of Columbus. Co-Chairman, Rutland Bicentennial Committee. Nine children: Joan Loring Wing of Rutland; Leonard F. Wing III of Castleton; Christopher Wing of Durango, Colorado; Timothy Wing of North Reading, Massachusetts; Mary Jane Wing Soares of Londonderry, New Hampshire; John Bartley Wing of Rutland; Ann Kidder Lee of Casper, Wyoming; Patricia Wing Bartenstein of Rutland; Katrina Wing Clark of Rutland. Predeceased by brother, Bruce Clark Wing and sister, Patricia Wing O'Rourke.
