Florence (Cooke) Baldwin was the second wife of Edward Baldwin of Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of Dr. Ben and Petronella (Ella Griffin) Cooke. Some records indicate she was born in Granville, North Carolina. Others say her birth was in the District of Columbia, where her parents were residents at the time. Fanny was a beloved teacher in the Business School. She taught shorthand when it was a new field. In September 1896, she wrote an article for the Evening Star describing the course and its benefits to students. Fanny was also teaching private courses. Fanny left behind her husband, parents, sister Ella George, and her adoring children Irene, Russell, Aimee, and Elsie Baldwin, all of whom were under the age of 18. Her brother, Herbert Cooke, preceded her in death. Her husband, Ed, died a month later on November 25, 1896. Her father, Dr. Cooke, died on December 24, 1896.
