John "Jack" J. Mazzitelli, 88, Grand Rapids, formerly of Bovey, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at The Wellstead of Rogers, Rogers, Minn.


He was born March 1, 1915, at Keewatin to Dominic and Christina (Bevacqua) Mazzitelli. He graduated from Greenway High School at Coleraine in 1934. He received a degree in education from Colorado State University, Greeley, Colo., in 1940. After graduating from college he taught school and was an athletic coach at Itasca Junior College, Coleraine, until entering the Army. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Aug. 3, 1942 to March 2, 1946, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. He was united in marriage to Kathleen "Kitty" McAlpine on Sept. 25, 1943, at Roseau. From 1948 to 1961, he owned and operated Jack's Army Navy Surplus Store in Bovey. He taught school from 1960 to 1980 at Connor-Jasper Junior High School at Bovey. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Grand Rapids.


He is survived by his children, John "Jack" Mazzitelli, Minnetonka, Michael Mazzitelli, Eyota, Patty Skordahl, Ramsey, James Mazzitelli, Ames, Iowa, Loni Flaherty, Big Lake; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Dominic Mazzitelli, Eden Prairie; sisters, Mary Jo Yates, Albuquerque, N.M. Helena Atkinson, Hopkins, Angela Kozak, Sun City West, Ariz., and Carmella Klinker, Nashwauk.


Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Kathleen, on March 31, 1998; and a brother, Joseph Mazzitelli.


Services: Friday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. at The Peterson Chapel St. Michael-Albertville Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Moriarty officiating.


Burial: Saturday, Nov. 29 at 11:30 a.m. at Itasca Calvary Cemetery, Grand Rapids, with the Rev. Tom Radaich officiating. Military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars.
