She refused to sleep at night remaining fully clothed, ready to respond to any imminent danger. Her fears were realized on the night of April 14-15 when the Titanic struck an iceberg on her maiden Atlantic crossing, resulting in the loss of 1,500 passengers and crew. She survived the sinking with her daughter Eva after being placed into lifeboat 14. They were rescued by the Carpathia and arrived in New York City on April 18th.
