Raymond Edgar Chambers was born July 1, 1916 in Floyd County, the son of Raymond W. and Sadie (Weston) Chambers. He was already working on the farm at the age of three riding a horse to bring in the cows for milking and by age five he was driving a team of three horses in the fields. Ray dearly loved working with the big draft horses and they loved him. On December 11, 1936, Ray was united in marriage to Marie Wilson at the Congregational Church Parsonage in Charles City. They lived within the Charles City area all their lives. Ray was a farmer at heart and for many years he and Marie lived and worked rented farms. Many times he also had to work another job to get money for supplies; on the railroad, Oliver Corporation, Dr. Salsbury's and then, after moving into Charles City, as a custodian at the Charles City Junior High for 18 years before retiring.

Ray was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Senior Citizens. His interests were farming, animals (especially his horses), fishing, feeding the birds and squirrels, reading about horses, polishing rocks and latch hook rugs. Family, friends and neighbors were very important to Ray, and he would do anything to help them whenever possible.

Living family members include his daughter, Darlene (Larry) Neely of Charles City; five grandchildren: Rachel (DeWight) Connerley of Floyd, Phil (Rhonda) Neely of Bluffton, South Carolina, Mark (Brenda) Neely of Longview, Texas, Tim (Donna) Neely of Wichita, Kansas and Steve (Ticha) Neely of Parker, Colorado; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; one sister, Virginia (Hurvey) Tudor of Charles City; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie, in 2013; four brothers: Forrest, Jim, Ned and Freeman; and his sister, Betty Starr.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church or Gideon's International.
