He was born in Elm Grove Township, Tazewell County, to Louis C. and Nina Bennet Abbott.
Surviving are one son, Mike (Karen) Abbott of Pekin; one brother, Bill (Jackie) Abbott of Pekin and one sister, Virginia Claybaugh of Neoga.
He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving from Aug. 18, 1943, to March 19, 1946, with the rank of seaman first class. Gene was stationed at Farragut, Idaho; San Bruno, Calif.; Espiritu Santo, New Herbrides; and Miami, Fla. He served aboard the USS PGM 21 and the USS LSM 985
Gene retired as a heavy equipment operator working out of Operating Engineers Local 649 of Peoria.
He enjoyed trapshooting and hunting. He was a former member of the American Trap shooters Association, Eagles Lodge, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
