Elizabeth (Betty) Bennett was born September 18, 1917 on Staten Island, New York to Vincent and Barbara (Schipits) Herschitz. Betty attended ad graduated from high school in Manhatten, NY. Following high school, she went to secretarial school, and was then employed by the US Navy as an executive secretary at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It was there she met co-worker, John R. Bennett.
Betty VanOss, and John Bennett were united in marriage on February 19, 1944 in Manhatten, NY.
John changed positions frequently as his career with the F.A.A. advanced. Betty stayed home, and supported John throughout his career. When the couple moved to New Jersey, Betty was exposed to the importance of volunteer work. She taught occupational therapy to handicapped children. During their lifetime, Jack and Betty traveled to various places around the world. The couple moved to Clark where they resided for many years. In 1998, they moved to Watertown.
Betty attended the United Congregational Church of Christ in Clark, attended the bazaars, and enjoyed quilting with the church ladies. She was a lifetime member of the American Contract Bridge League, the Clark Golf Club, P.E.O Sisterhood B.O. Chapter of Clark, and the N.C.C. of Clark, and Watertown.
Betty's earthly life ended on early Saturday morning July 2, 2005 in a Lake Norden Care Center at the age of 87.
Betty will be sadly missed by her sister Helen Sweeney, Island Park, NY; her brother, Peter Van Oss, Whitestone, NY; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Vincent VanOss, and a sister, Mildred Costanzo.
