Dorein “Sam” Charles Sutherland passed away on December 12, 2014 after a brief illness. Sam was born April 16, 1934 to Einner and Dorothy Sutherland in Bingham, Utah. He graduated from Bingham High School in 1952. As a young man he worked at Kennecott Copper Mine and served in the U.S. Army for 2 years. Sam attended the University of Utah and graduated with Bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business Management. Sam was an aerospace engineer at Hercules for over 30 years. In 1961, he married Joan Winn and they had three children Tracy, Kirk and Shelly. Sam enjoyed sports. He played football as a young man and loved to go skiing where he taught his kids the finer points of the downhill turn. In summer you could find him jogging, playing golf or relaxing outside reading his paper and enjoying a cup of coffee. He was a shrewd investor and the stock market proved to be a challenge he liked to pursue. Later in life, he enjoyed working out regularly at the Dimple Dell Recreation Center.

He is survived by his sister Joan Butterworth, brother Jeff, son Kirk, daughters Tracy Milne and Shelly (Jay) Roberts and many extended family members. Preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother Van.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 19, 2014 at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), Sandy, Utah. A visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the services.
