Death of Joshua Woodrow
Died, at Hillsboro, Ohio, Saturday
September 4, 1890
Joshua Woodrow, in the 85th year of his age. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Dr. W. J. McSurely, on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the remains were interred in the beautiful cemetery of our town.
In the death of Mr. Woodrow Hillsboro has lost her oldest male inhabitant.
He was born in Culpeper County, Virginia November 4, 1806. At the age of two years, in the fall of 1808, he came with his parents to Hillsboro, which was then in its first year of village hood and nothing but a straggling collection of log cabins built among the forest trees marked the spot where the beautiful city now stands. The great trees stood thickly on the streets and the wagon tracks winding around among them formed the only roadway.
The father of Mr. Woodrow cut the logs with which to build his first house from trees that were growing on what are now the principal streets of Hillsboro. At the age of sixteen Joshua Woodrow was sent to a school in Cincinnati, taught by Thomas Matthews, the father of the late Chief Justice Stanley Matthews. After his return from school he engaged in mercantile business with his father. He was elected and served two or three terms as county Auditor. At the expiration of his terms of office he returned to his old business of general merchandise.
He enlisted as a soldier at the age of fifty-five in the Sixteenth Ohio, commanded by Col. William H. Trimble. His regiment was with Fremont in the Shenandoah Valley and taken prisoner at Harper's Ferry, afterward paroled and sent home. Mr. Woodrow was then and until the close of the war in government employ at Nashville, Tennessee, Stevenson, Alabama, Hunterville and Louisville, Kentucky in the quartermaster's department. In connection with this it is a matter of interest that Mr. Woodrow was the oldest private soldier enlisted from Highland County and his son, Robert S., was the youngest, he being but 15 years and 10 months at the time.
