Obituary
Mrs. Mary H. Woodrow
The funeral services of Mrs. Mary H. Woodrow were held last Sabbath afternoon in the Methodist Episcopal Church of Hillsboro and were attended by a concourse filling the
entire church and constituting an unusually large procession as the remains of this venerable woman were borne to the cemetery.
At the close of a brief funeral discourse, Dr. Starr read the following sketch of Mrs. Woodrow's life and was followed with appropriate and suggestive remarks by Rev. Dr. McSurely:
Mary Hansborough Woodrow was the daughter of William and Sarah Hansborough to whom she was born in Stephensburg, Culpepper County, Virginia September 15, 1785.
When twenty-one years of age Mary became the wife of Isaac Woodrow, and two years after their marriage the happy and adventurous young couple came into the State of Ohio
and settled in Hillsboro, Ohio was, when they came into it, an infant State but five years of age, and had a population of less than 200,000; while Highland County had less than
100 inhabitants. What the village of Hillsboro must have been can easily be conjectured, when it is remembered that for years after this, forests were growing over what are now our principal streets.
Mrs. Woodrow soon tired of this wilderness life and they returned to their former home in Virginia. Subsequently they came back and in 1817, they again settled in Hillsboro, of which they both remained citizens to the end of their respective lives.
Mr. Woodrow was one of the early business men of Hillsboro, but was so subject to rheumatic disease that he was compelled to defer general business and gave himself to the work of teaching and remained in the schools until compelled by the advance of his disease to give up this also. Mr. Woodrow died July 21, 1861, at the advanced age of 93 years.
After the death of Mr. Woodrow, Mrs. Woodrow continued for several years to occupy her own house, but in after years she made her home with her only son, William, in the bosom
of whose family she ceased to live on Saturday morning, April 1, 1882, in the 97th year of her age.
Mrs. Woodrow belonged to a long lived family and attained to the age of nearly 100 years, having lived in Hillsboro through, at least, two generations. She left behind her at the time of her death her only children - a son, William, and a daughter, Mrs. Tucker, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, some of whom are already grown. Mother Woodrow's energy and charity early gained for her the sobriquet of the Good Samaritan, for it was her habit to be in the homes of want and suffering as a ministering angel. As a nurse, a benefactor and a sympathizing friend, she had few equals in the days of vigorous health. In many homes she came as a ministering angel in the time of bereavement and rendered such services as were most worthy of the appreciation they received. Mrs. Woodrow became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in her early womanhood. As a Christian she was remarkable for her steadfastness, faith and activity.
Her religious life antedates the lifetime of nearly every member of her church, Christopher Arthur, Benjamin Chaney, Sarah H. Chaney, Jacob Miller and Mary Ann Miller being the only survivors of the class of which Mrs. Woodrow was formerly a member.
