It is with profound sadness the family announces his passing on October 28, 2021 with his family by his side. He was born July 24, 1930 in Tweedside, NB, the son of the late George and Ella (Kingston) Messer. He was 91 years old.

Hayes is survived by his loving wife Berneice (Crowley) Messer; his son Pastor Terry Messer (Mary); his daughters, Marilyn Boon (Ray), Ella Mae McGillicuddy (Raymond), Brenda Little (Mike), Jane Barr (Fred), all of McAdam, NB, Gayle Curtis (Kay) and Beverly Kantor (Robert); of Harvey, NB; step-children Richard Coburn (Cindy), Abbotsford, BC, Sherry Johnston (Darren) and Corine Coburn (Frank); his brother Vaughan Messer (Bessie); his sister Shirley Jamieson; a sister-in-law Kaye Messer; sixteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife Hamlyn (McLeod) Messer; sisters Muriel Martin (late Goldie) and Lorraine Hickey (late Mike); brother Eugene Messer and brother-in-law Ivan Jamieson.

Hayes was employed by CPR in McAdam for 41 years as a Carman. He was a volunteer with the McAdam Fire Department. Hayes was an avid hunter and fisherman at his cottage on Oromocto Lake and he enjoyed curling for a number of years. He was a great dancer and loved his uncle Don Messer fiddle music and the Jam music at the Kingsclear Fire Hall. He took some big trips, Alaska Cruise, trips to Dominican Republic and to Cuba, all which he really enjoyed. Hayes was a member of St. Andrews United Church.

The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the DECH doctors and nurses on 4 NE and 3 E Palliative Care.

Visiting hours will be held at St. Andrews United Church … St. James Room, 2350 Route 3, Harvey, NB on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 from 1 to 2:30 pm. The funeral service will follow at 3 pm from the church with Rev. Christine Johnson and Rev. Kay Clowater officiating. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, proof of both vaccinations and a government ID and masks are mandatory. Interment will be later at Rockland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Hayes memory may be made to St. Andrews United Church in Harvey or Rockland Cemetery in McAdam or a charity of the donor's choice.
