Abeln, Eliane (nee Rutkowski), passed away Fri., Dec. 19, 2014. Beloved wife of Harry J. Abeln, dearest mother of Harry Jr. and Mark, dear mother-in-law of Connie and dear step-grandmother of Bill Hartnett, dear aunt of Vivi and Janie, dear cousin, and faithful friend to many. Eliane was born in Le Havre, France. She and her family lived in Le Havre during the war. Bombing totally destroyed their family home along with losing many of her school classmates. After the war she held jobs in Le Havre and then moved and worked in Paris as an executive secretary in the Railway lines. She could speak, write and take shorthand in French as well in English. After working several years in Paris, Eliane, her sister and mother all came to Atlanta, Georgia where she met Harry.
Eliane and Harry were long-time members of the Missouri Botanical Garden, and had many friends in the St. Louis Engineers' Club and the Management Club of Emerson Electric. Eliane corresponded with her family and friends in France, maintaining close ties until the end. Eliane enjoyed travel. Harry and Eliane traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. They escorted French relatives and friends throughout the southern states and Disney world.
After moving to Washington, MO, Eliane and Harry attended Chamber of Commerce events and programs at the Washington Historical Society. They enjoyed their daily lunches at local restaurants, and drives in the beautiful countryside.
