Richard served in the same Confederate company as his brother William, Company B, of the 13th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. He was captured shortly before the end of the Civil War and gave his parole at Pt. Lookout, Maryland, where he was imprisoned.
His brother William Loundes Anderson is buried at Shockoe Hill.
Another brother, John Randolph Anderson, is buried at Lexington Cemetery.
Between 1870 and 1875, Richard became a teacher at the Richmond Male Orphan Asylum, where he was employed until his death in 1894.
