Herman Lester Merrifield, 92, of Barrackville, died Tuesday morning (Oct. 9, 2007) in Pleasant Acres Christian Haven. He was born Sept. 22, 1909, in Rivesville, son of the late Glen and Lottie Neely Merrifield.

He was preceded in death by his wonderful and devoted wife Geraldine Merrifield, who died in 2000.

Mr. Merrifield was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School and attended Fairmont State College. Mr. Merrifield was a member of Barrackville United Methodist Church, being a past member of the finance committee. He was a member of the AF and A Masons Lodge No. 9, in Fairmont and was also a 32 degree Mason. He was a charter member of the Barrackville Lions Club for 50 years, with current membership status. He served as the Town Recorder for 18 years. He was a life member of the National Mine Rescue Corporation, a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Co. Mr. Merrifield had a career of 50 years in the mining industry, working as a safety engineer.

He was survived by two sons and their wives, Jon T. and Regina Merrifield of Fairmont, and Neal and Donna Merrifield of Vienna, Va.; two grandsons, Michael S. Merrifield and his wife Wendy of Parkersburg and Neal H. Merrifield II of Vienna, Va.; five granddaughters, Amanda Bunner of Fairmont, Julie Mull of Pittsburgh, Pa., Haylea Newcity of Fort Smith, Ark., Alessa Westrick of Fairfax, Va., and Sara Lewis of Springfield, Ill.; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Merrifield was also preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Merrifield.

Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 1-9 p.m. today. Visitation will continue from 12-2 p.m. on Thursday in Barrackville United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held in the Church Thursday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Scott Ingleton officiating.

Burial will follow in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Morgantown. Fairmont Lodge No. 9 AF and AM will conduct Masonic services at the graveside.
