Jewel Mae Rice Daniel, 88, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014, in San Marcos. Funeral services are under the direction of Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home, Cameron, Texas. The Celebration Service and interment will be held at 2 p.m., December 26, 2014, in the Mausoleum Chapel, followed by a graveside service in Alexandria Memorial Gardens, Alexandria, LA.

Jewel Mae was born in Vancouver, Washington, and reared in the Philippine Islands, San Francisco, CA, and Texas. She was educated at San Marcos Baptist Academy in San Marcos, Texas, Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Southwest Texas University in San Marcos, Texas, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.

On April 4, 1944, she married Rev. Larry Hunter Daniel. As an adolescent and youth education seminar speaker, Jewel represented Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She served as the youth and drama director, writing plays and pageants for the theater department at First Baptist Church, Shreveport, LA, where Rev. Larry Daniel served as Minister of Music, 1948 to 1952. She also served as Vacation Bible School director for both the Caddo Association in Shreveport and the State of Louisiana.

Jewel served on the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) Executive Board and as the state Christian education chairperson, at which time she wrote the state mission programs for the Southern Baptist churches in Louisiana. She was an inspirational and promotional speaker at WMU conventions, Association meetings, and men’s and women’s philanthropic organizations. She was also the women’s chairperson for Louisiana College Crusade Region Three under G. Earl Guinn, President of Louisiana College, Pineville, LA.

From 1965 to 1967, Jewel Mae was President of the Band Parents Club for the Pineville High School Marching Band, as her daughter served as Drum Major of the band. She also directed many Antique Shows to raise money for the band program. From 1969 to 1970, she was President of the Rebel Club, the booster club for the Pineville High School football team, the Pineville High School Rebels.

For the past four years, she lived with her daughter and son-in-law in New Braunfels, Texas. Living in New Braunfels she was able to attend and thoroughly enjoy, performances by The Steel Magnolias who are directed by her daughter, Debbie Daniel. She was made an honorary Steel Magnolia in 2011 and is heralded as the original.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, on March 23, 1964

Survivors include her daughters: Darlene Maroney and husband, Gary, Deborah Daniel and Gordon L, and Joan Daniel; grandchildren: Daniel Maroney, Michael Maroney, Gabriel Maroney, Samuel Maroney, Sarah Maroney Haussecker, Joel Maroney, Tyson Daniel, Deanna Daniel Rutland and Dana Daniel Stephens: and 20 great-grandchildren.
