TWO STUDENTS DIE IN BLAST IN BASEMENT

Son of former Aurorans One of Victims at Maywood

Two 17 year old high school students were fatally injured and a third was seriously hurt last night in an explosion while they conducted an experiment in a basement chemistry laboratory in Maywood. They were preparing for their final examinations in chemistry preparatory to graduation next month.
Robert Adam, son of Mr & Mrs Michael Adam, 1200 S. 4th Ave, Maywood, formerly of Aurora, and Albert Klasen died of injuries in Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, where they and Kenneth Colberg, 16, had been removed after they were found lying in the kitchen of Adam's father Michael. They had made their way from the basement of the Adams' home unaided before they collapsed. Colberg suffered injuries to his mouth.
John Peterson, police lieutenant, said he found in the basement lab remnants of a 1 1/2 inch pipe which he said had been splintered by the detonation of unidentified explosives. He said he also found a battery charger, a hot electric iron and wire.
Michael ADam, a Chicago and North Western railway machinist, his wife and their oldest son, Raymond, now serving in the Navy, formerly lived in Aurora on Simms St. From Aurora they moved to Belvidere, where Robert was born and then moved to Maywood.
Surviving Robert are his grandparents Mr & Mrs Charles Hein of 621 Jefferson Ave, Aurora, and 5 uncles of Aurora, Nicholas Hein of Aurora Ave, John Reuland 412 Hankes Ave, William Reuland 609 Edwards St, John Adam 719 Sheridan St, Nicholas Adam 719 N Root St and one aunt, Mrs Lena Koster of Columbia St, Aurora.
