Army Brigadier General and founder of the famous Carlisle Indian School. A Civil War veteran, he was assigned to Fort Marion, Florida in 1875, and was so pleased with his efforts to educate Indian prisoners that he decided to expand his methods. In 1879 Pratt converted Pennsylvania's Carlisle Barracks to a boarding school that followed a curriculum which combined academics and vocational training with actions that subordinated Indian heritage, including assigning children American names and having them dress in the same clothing as white people. He also implemented the "outing system" that placed students in the homes of local families to further their adjustment to white society. Pratt retired in 1903 and the school closed in 1918. Famed football coach Glenn "Pop" Warner led the Carlisle team from 1899 to 1904 and 1906 to 1915. Carlisle's most notable alumnus, Olympic and professional athlete Jim Thorpe, was a 1912 graduate.
