A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. Monday at St. Dominic's Catholic Church for Dorathea Rose Simons, 78, of Orland. She died May 14, 1997, at her home after a long illness.
Born Dec. 18, 1918, in Myrtle Point, OR, she was the second of five daughters born to Nellie and Arthur Chandler.
She attended schools in Myrtle Point and was among the top of her class when she and 54 classmates graduated in 1936.
A few years after her graduation she and the family moved to Eureka/Arcata area. She worked at the California Barrel Company in Arcata for a few years. On March 27, 1943, she married Manuel Simons in Eureka. The couple lived there for the next six years.
In 1948 the family moved to Orland after purchasing a dairy on County Road 14. They remained in the dairy business until Manuel's death in 1966. In 1948 she and her daughter, Lynn, moved to Orland. She worked in the cafeteria for Orland Public Schools, then later she worked at Duche Nut Company until she retired about 1984.
Mrs. Simons loved family holidays, especially Christmas, and looked forward to family reunions. She devoted much of her time to her daughters and grandchildren. She enjoyed attending events and sports activities her grandchildren were in.
She loved animals and appreciated the beauty of a nice garden. She was an energetic, generous and compassionate woman who saw only the best in everyone. Her kindness and warmth will be missed.
Survivors include three daughters, Toni Simons of Reno, Jeanette Lacque and Lynn Fortner, both of Orland; sisters, June Curcek of McArthur, Gene Lahti of Roseville, and Artyce Moreau of Garden Valley. There are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, or Just For Children in care of the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of F.D. Sweet & Sons of Orland.
