Sophia was born 23 January 1868 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin and is the daughter of Friedrich Schwarz (1835-1912) and Friedericka Steckmesser (1845-1918). She married Ludwig (Louis) Hindt (24 November 1864-9 July 1900) on 31 May 1887 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
Upon her husbands death she was left with 4 young children and on 8 May 1906 she married William Grade (1852-1928).
