V. Laverne Norris Ables, known to family and friends as “Nana”, 99, passed away Saturday December 27, 2014, at Westminster Village Health Care. She was born October 14, 1915, in Grant County, the daughter of Joe and Zella Brewer Whitlock. She grew up in Muncie and graduated from Muncie High School and attended Normal College, now Ball State University.
Laverne was a travel consultant with the Hoosier Motor Club, (AAA), for thirteen years and was a Docent at Minnetrista Cultural Center for fifteen years were she received an award for 5,000 hours of service.
Mrs. Ables loved to travel, read, sew, needlepoint, crochet and quilt. Over the years she had crocheted many hats and booties for the babies at Ball Memorial Hospital, and she made at least one full size postage stamp quilt for each of her kids and grandkids.
She was the oldest living member of the Unitarian Universalist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Linda C. Lindsey, (husband, G. Harold), North Port, FL; her son Samuel J. Norris, (wife, Jana), Muncie, IN; four grandchildren, Scott K. Lindsey, Sarasota, FL, Sally K. Lindsey, Bradenton, FL, Shane A. Norris, (wife, Stephanie), Anderson, IN; and Shelley R. Norris, Carmel, IN; two great-grandchildren, Nate A. Norris and Ryann W. Norris, both of Anderson, IN; and several nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Ralph E. Norris and Robert S. Ables; and her brother, Everett Whitlock.
