He died on 20 Sep 1862 at Bolivar, Virginia, as a result of wounds from the Battle of Antietam. He was 24 years, 9 months and 18 days old. On 21 Oct 1872 Farnum Abbott, his father, received a pension based on Samuel's service.
On 17 Sep 1900 Samuel Dwight Abbott was included on the 15th Regiment Massachusetts Infantry Civil War memorial at Antietam Battlefield, Sharpsburg, Maryland, as having died of his wounds received at the battle.
