Melzena Irene "Peg" Kugler died at her home following a long fight with cancer. She was cared for by her daughters.

She was a daughter of the late Charles V. and Bessie I. Smyers. Raised in Corsica, PA, later of Akron, Ohio, Porter Township, PA, and San Diego, Ca. she spent her so-called retirement years in Tehachapi.

She was married to the late Lewis T. Kugler of Georgia. He died October 4, 1983.

Mom had worked all her adult life, from the Goodyear plant in Akron, Sylvania Electric in Brookville, PA, owner and operator of Jeri's Beauty Bazaar in LaMesa, and part owner of a local candy shop after her retirement. She was a liberated woman long before it became fashionable. She was a great mother and never had anything bad to say about anyone.

She loved to garden, grow flowers ( especially yellow roses and peonies), paint, weave, crochet, sew and all manners of crafting. She was well known locally for her "Kitchen Witches" and other nylon stocking creations. For some time she raised Finches in her home. To say she was well rounded was putting it mildly!!

A founding and active member of the Tehachapi Arts Association, she also was a member of the local hospital guild and the Tehachapi Heritage League. Her paintings grace many local homes as well as all over the U.S. and some foreign countries.

Survivors include a step-son, John Kuglar of Orange Beach, Alabama; three daughters, Mrs. Ron (Connie) Fourmet and Mrs. Ken (Jeanne) Parker, both of Tehachapi, and Mrs. John (Louise) Smith of New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Clyde (Alma) Humphry of Norwalk, Ohio, Mrs. Ted (Lois) Varga of Fryburg, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Meade (Wilda) Gathers of New Bethlehem, Mrs. Thurman (Bonnie) Spangler of Alabama and Mrs. Robert (Mary Lou) Campbell of Seffner, Florida.

A brother, Charles Smyers and a sister, Frances Osbourne, also preceded her in death.

Services were held at the Wood Family Funeral Service Chapel in Tehachapi with Rev. Marvin Anderson, former pastor of the Good Shepherd Lutheren Church, officiating.
