Born in Langenbielau Prussia (now Bielawa, Poland) to Friedrich Wilhelm Stephan and Anna Karoline "Caroline" (Schobel) Stephan.

With her husband Gustav Hermann Hilbert and their children, she immigrated on the 'The Herschel', which left Hamburg on 1 April 1874 and arrived off Cape Moreton on 14 July 1874. Her parents followed in 1877 and settled in Queensland.
