James is the son of Willis B. and Margaret (Martin) Barton.

James served in Company L, 1st Alabama Calvary in the 'War Between the States.'
He did NOT want the South to secede from the Union of the States.

James was married three times...

First marriage was to Martha Jane Garrard on June 5, 1848 in Hall County, Georgia. Martha died in 1876.

Second: James married Rebecca (Magura/McGuire?) circa 1877 in Marion County, Alabama. (The year of marriage is in dispute among descendants.) Rebecca died circa 1884.

Third: James married Pulchara Gaskins circa 1886 in Marion County, Alabama.
