James Bridges is believed to be the child of William and Priscilla Kelly Bridges. He married Mary Ann Stockdale. They were they parents of five known sons:
- William H.
- Samuel Perry
- John W.
- Enoch George
- Oscar H.

James Bridges served in the Civil War as a private in Co. H, 7 Ohio Infantry and as such was provided a military headstone. All of his sons also served in the Union Army.
