Lavina is the daughter of George W. Little, her mother's name is not known. According to the 1830 census of Gibson County, Tennessee, Lavina was born between 1800 and 1810. She married William C. Gentry in Gibson County, Tennessee on January 10, 1836. They remained in Tennessee until after the birth of their first son, William C. Gentry, Jr. in 1837/39. Lavina's second son, Allen Merritt Gentry, was born in 1841 in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. William Gentry, Sr. secured a guardian to oversee his son's inheritance from their grandfather George W. Little. The guardian was William R. Whitlow who was married to Lavina's sister Charlotte. Lavina was the widow of Jesse Scallion when she married William C. Gentry and had four children from that marriage. Neither Lavina or William are found in any 1850 census records.
