Son of Charles Bowling and Anne Locke Bowling, he was born in 1835. He married Frances Ellen Doleman 18 FEB 1864 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He fought in the Civil War Under Company A of the 1st Battalion Maryland Infantry 25 August, 1862. He was wounded and held prisoner of war at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
