VANDALIA, Ohio -- Richard "Dick" L Barton, age 76, of Vandalia, Ohio, for the last 3½ years where he lived with his daughter Joni and her husband Jeff Scharff, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Heartland of Eaton, where he had been a resident for only three days.

He was born Dec. 2, 1930, in Eldorado, Ohio, to the late Lloyd W. and Gladys I. (Richards) Barton.


He was a 1948 graduate of Monroe School, Preble County, Ohio; was employed at N.C.R. for 28 years, Inland Manufacturing for three years and finally at Shopsmith for 18 years, retiring in 1998; completed four-year and two-year apprenticeships in toolmaking and tool design; senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers; served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953; 35-year member of the American Legion; Honorary Kentucky Colonel; retired member of the Ohio State Patrol Auxiliary; was one of the original founding members of the National Trail Booster Club with over 20 years of service to that organization; former member of the advisory board of Miami Valley Career Technology Center.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patty L. (Floyd) Barton, who passed away in 1996; and sister, Dixie Jean Gilley.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Joni L. and Jeffery A. Scharff of Vandalia, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy L. and James M. Waldren of West Alexandria, Ohio; son, Michael L. Barton of Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Viewing: 4-6 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2007, with funeral services to immediately follow at 6 p.m. at the Girton-Schmidt-Boucher Funeral Home, Eaton, Ohio, with the Rev. Lowell T. Spencer officiating. Burial to follow at the conclusion of the service at Ware's Chapel Cemetery, West Manchester, Ohio, with full military honors provided by the Preble County Honor Guard.
