Commander Alton Murray Barlow, USN (Ret) was born in Los Angeles, California on February 3, 1923 and peacefully departed this life at home in The Chamberlin after a lengthy illness on October 26, 2014. He graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy and served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific and as a Naval aviator during the Korean War. After retiring from the Navy in 1966, Murray worked for Hughes Aircraft Company. He loved to travel and was an avid skeet shooter, and when he moved to Williamsburg in 1995, he also enjoyed serving as a docent at the Mariners' Museum.

He was predeceased by his first wife Carrie Condon Barlow and is survived by his wife Joan Waters Gordner Barlow, daughters Nancy Hannify, Peggy Happ (husband David) and Vicki Williams and son Jeffrey Barlow (wife Donna), and by step-daughters Lynda Webb and Jan Miller (husband Al) and step-son David Gordner (wife Sheila), 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
