Arlen Melbourne Driscoll, aged 68, passed away December 31, 2014 from complications related to Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). He was proud to be a native Houstonian and longtime resident of West University Place where he maintained a paper route as a young boy. After graduating from M. B. Lamar High School in 1964, Arlen attended the University of Texas to study Mechanical Engineering. He then left his beloved Texas to work for Westinghouse in Philadelphia and earned his Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He returned home to earn his Law Degree from the University of Houston and became an attorney for Bracewell and Patterson and later Olpin, Maynard, Parsons, Pohl & Bennett. Arlen then partnered with David Lacey with whom he worked for many years before opening his own law firm, The Driscoll Law Firm.
While his sons, Andrew and Alexander, were young, Arlen served as a Little League coach and held numerous leadership positions in the West University Little League. He was a long time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He had many fond memories of his time spent as a cub scout leader. He was a gourmet cook and loved spending his afternoons with his custom made grill.
Arlen was a devoted member of The Texas Exes and the Longhorn Foundation. He rarely missed a Longhorn home football game and followed many other UT athletic events on the Longhorn Channel. Arlen was a proud alumnus of the Alpha Nu chapter of Sigma Chi fraternity and devoted countless volunteer hours assisting as the organization's attorney and advisor.
Arlen was very witty, and possessed a wry use of language and loved to consult the dictionaries kept in each room of the house.
Arlen is survived by his wife, Judy Felton Jones, his son Andrew Lockwood Driscoll and wife Katie and infant granddaughter Julie Ann, his son Alexander Smith Driscoll, his nieces Jennifer and husband Greg Aber, Lucia and husband Will Cropper, brother-in-law James Richardson, brother and sister-in-law Jeff and Lisa Davis and their daughters Katelyn Davis Baroch, Allison Davis Frazier, and Rebecca Davis Jahnke, brother and sister-in-law Jan and Chris Robinson and their daughters Kelly Mohr and Christine Robinson, and stepchildren Christopher Jones, Laura Jones Ryan and Elizabeth Jones.
Arlen is predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Julie Davis Driscoll, his parents, Melbourne and Sara Driscoll and his sister, Corliss D Richardson.
A visitation for Arlen will be Sunday, January 4, 2015 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home from 3-5 PM. Graveside service will be Monday at 10:00am at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, followed by services celebrating his life at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 5501 South Main, Houston, Tx. 77004 at 1:00 PM.
