Joining the Navy during World War II, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in Naval Intelligence, At the age of 36, he became the youngest mayor in the history of Fresno CA. Dunn earned the nickname "No-Fun Dunn" because of his zest in leading raids on bordellos and gambling dens.
