Breuer, Ned W.

Ned William Breuer, age 84, a Manitowoc resident, died Saturday, January 3, 2015, at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Ned was born June 14, 1930, in Manitowoc, son of the late Orval William Breuer and Louise Schuette Breuer. He attended McKinley Elementary School, Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, and Lincoln High School, graduating with the class of 1948. He attended University of Wisconsin - Madison, graduating with a B.S. in civil engineering. He was a member of the Triangle Fraternity for engineers and honorary engineering fraternities Tau Beta Pi and Chi Omega. He was in ROTC at UW-Madison, graduating as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. He served briefly in Japan, including Okinawa, before going to Korea. He joined the 573rd Pontoon Bridge Company, eventually becoming the company commander. Upon returning from Korea, he married Janet Eleanor Kaufman on September 4, 1954 at St. Paul Catholic Church. After their wedding, they resided in Wausau, where Ned worked in the Bahr Construction Co. office. They returned to Manitowoc in late 1955. Ned continued with Bahr Construction and oversaw construction of wastewater treatment plants and other mostly underground projects. He became secretary of the company and eventually president. He thoroughly enjoyed his work. For a number of years, he served on the board of Kaufman Manufacturing as secretary. He also was involved with the Associated General Contractors, serving on the bargaining committee. Ned was a member of First Lutheran Church, B.P.O. Elks #687, the Manitowoc Yacht Club, the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA, the Manitowoc Maritime Museum, and the UW Alumni Association. Most of all, he loved his canoes and spent many happy hours on rivers and lakes. He participated in the Manitowoc River Whitewater Race with each of his seven children. He also enjoyed sailing, hiking, cross-country skiing, swimming, and the family cottage. Cutting brush and hand-sawing were his favorite pastimes. He was anxious to travel to faraway countries and saw many wonderful places. He loved tennis at the "Y" and on outdoor courts. He was also an avid duck hunter. He enjoyed having the whole family at the cottage and for the holidays and was a wonderful father.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; a daughter and son-in-law: Ann and Tom Shebesta, Mishicot; five sons and three daughters-in-law: Kurt and Gloria Breuer, Marinette, Paul Breuer, Lakewood, Colorado, James and Lisa Breuer, Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, Thomas and Cheryl Breuer, Madison, and Karl Breuer, Lakewood, Colorado; eight grandchildren: Rebecca Breuer, St. Paul, Minnesota, Rachel Breuer, Madison, Erik Breuer, Marinette, Nicole (Nick) Schott, Green Bay, Robert (Christine) Shebesta, Manitowoc, Krysta Shebesta, De Pere, Marliese (Connor) von Huene, Meridian, Idaho, and Tyler Deml-Breuer, Grand Junction, Colorado.
