Stuart "Stu" Paul Erickson

ERICKSON, Stuart Paul "Stu," Aug 12, 1930 – Aug 31, 2012.

Stuart Paul "Stu" Erickson passed away on August 31, 2012. He is survived by his long-time, loving companion Phyllis Ostblom; his daughters, Susan Erickson and Ann Erickson (son-in-law Juan Shepperd); by his granddaughters, Elizabeth and Anna Marin and grandsons, José and Mateo Shepperd; brother, Robert and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Erickson; numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many loving members of Phyllis' family, including Julee and Shawn Davis; Eddie Ostblom; Doug Ostblom, and Phyllis' grandchildren: Beth, David and Josh Ostblom and Shawn and Brian Davis. He was predeceased by his older brother Dean and by Matthew Ostblom.

Stu was born on August 12, 1930 in the Benson neighborhood of Omaha, to Edward and Elizabeth Erickson. He graduated from Benson High School and graduated in 1952 from Creighton University, magna cum laude, with a degree in English. Stu then served his country honorably as a member of the U.S. Army 8219th artillery unit stationed in Korea. While serving in the Army, Stu made deep friendships that have lasted a lifetime, particularly with Don "Frenchie" Belanger and Rupert "Nellie" Nelson.

Other than his service in Korea and a short time living in Lincoln, Nebraska, Stu spent his life in his beloved hometown of Omaha. He was a journalist, working for the Omaha World-Herald and Omaha Sun newspapers, and had a long career in the public relations field, working for Creighton University, Boys Town and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, among others. He had a natural gift for writing.

Stu cherished his family and was a proud father and grandfather. He and Phyllis enjoyed many trips to Austin, Texas to visit daughters Susan and Ann and Stu's precious grandchildren. Stu greatly enjoyed the many rounds of golf he played every summer and counted his golfing and bowling buddies as among his best friends in life.

Stu loved all that is quintessentially of Omaha and of Nebraska and that represents home to his family….Nebraska football games, Creighton basketball games, the College World Series, the fine weather of a Midwestern day. He grew up in the Roman Catholic Church and was true to his faith all his life. We will miss his presence here on Earth and are thankful for all that he has passed on to us.

The family will receive friends Monday, September 3, 5pm to 7pm with WAKE SERVICE at 7pm at the West Center Chapel. FUNERAL MASS Tuesday, Sep 4, 9:30am at St. John Catholic Church at Creighton University, 2500 California Plaza with military honors by Millard American Legion Post 374 and VFW Post 8334.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions in Stu's honor are encouraged to send them to Christian Urban Education Services (CUES), 2207 Wirt Street, Omaha, NE 68110.
