Jacob Painter was the son of Asher & Achchar "Achsah" Van Doren Painter. His mother, Achsah died when he was not quite 11 years old, leaving him, his brothers, John & Christopher and his sister, Deborah, who was not yet seven without a mother.

It may be that Jacob was named for his grandfather, Jacob Painter, Asher's father and his sister, Deborah may have been named after her grandmother, Asher's mother.

Jacob married Jemima Kinney on December 4, 1845 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

They had the following children, son, Israel who died shortly after his birth in 1846 and is buried in the Painter plot at Woodschurch.

Daughter, Achsah, who would have been named after Jacob's mother. Achsah(also known as Acca) married John Thompson but there were no children from this marriage.

Son, James Painter who married Rachel Kuhl and had three known children, Mary, Elisha and Oliver.

Lastly a daughter, Permelia L. "Painter" Wycoff.

Jacob was a farmer in Hunterdon County and the record of his death lists he died in South Somerville, Bridgewater Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. The birth date listed is based on his age at death.
