DEATH NEAR BIRTH
Cyrus L. Eaton Passes as Wife Bears Him Daughter.
But Few Rooms Apart.

Father Dies Not Knowing of His Offspring and Mother Has Not Been Told of Husband's Demise - Spanish War Veteran.

Cyrus Lee Easton, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, died yesterday morning at the Good Samaritan Hospital. By a strange decree of fate, while Eaton lay dying, his wife, in a room but a few doors away, gave birth to a little daughter. The baby was born day before yesterday and at that time Dr. Whiting, who was in attendance on the father, said that his case was virtually hopeless. He died without knowing that he had become a father.

While the physicians were doing everything in their power to save Eaton's life, the knowledge of his condition was kept from his wife, and although he died at 2 o'clock yesterday morning, the news has been still withheld from her. It was said last night that both the child and its mother were doing admirably and that Mrs. Eaton would be strong enough in a few days to bear the shock which the knowledge of her husband's death will entail.

Mr. Eaton was a member of Camp Scout Young No. 2 of the Spanish-American War Veterans. He had served as a private in the Eighth California Volunteers and following the expiration of this enlistment had joined the Hospital Corps of the Regular Army. He was discharged from the Army in 1902. He had lived in Portland for the past two or three years and until just before his death had been the proprietor of a shooting gallery on Fourth street.

His death resulted from appendicitis. Being a man of great activity and physical strength, he had disregarded his ailment until the inflamed appendix had become gangrenous and a surgical operation was the last resort. He was removed to the hospital two weeks ago and after his attack the delicate condition of his wife necessitated her being taken there too.

Mrs. Eaton is the daughter of Robert Hatton, who lives at Woodmere Station, on the Mount Scott line. The funeral services for Mr. Eaton will be held under the auspices of the Spanish-American War Veterans and will occur at the undertaking parlors of J.P. Finley & Son, Monday afternoon. The interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.
