Larkin was the only son of Larkin, Sr and Lydia.
He enlisted in the Marines 12 November 1964, at a recruiting office in Jacksonville, Florida.
Upon arriving in Vietnam, Larkin was assigned to H&S Company, 3rd Shore Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. The Marines were on a combat patrol on 0630H when a hostile explosive device was detonated wounding Larkin. He was med-evac and died of his wounds at a Naval Hospital in Danang at 0930H.
