Obituary for Grace Burns

Grace P. Burns, 99, of Coldwater, passed away on January 5, 2015 at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater.

The funeral service will be Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 12:00 Noon at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Dave Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM.

Grace was born September 4, 1915 to Frank and Lottie (Bell) Van Akin in Jackson and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1933. On June 4, 1936, she married the love of her life, William H. Burns. He preceded her in death on January 20, 1960.

Mrs. Burns worked in administration for the Community Health Center of Branch County, retiring in 1978. After her retirement, she had worked in the office of Dr. Bailey & Dr. Bacon.

Grace was a long-time member of the OES, serving as Worthy Matron. She enjoyed bowling, which she did for over 50 years, playing golf at the country club and belonging to various card clubs. Grace was a true lady. She was always proper and known for her kindness and positive attitude. Her true joy in life was her family, especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Burns is survived by her children Sally Knowles of Athens, Michael (Kendra) Burns of Coldwater, and Susan (Jack) Brown of Hillsdale; her grandchildren Scott (Marcene) Heckman, Lisa (Eric) Rockwell, Steve (Melinda) Burns, Stephanie (Randy) Nichols, Tod (Michell) Pifer all of Coldwater, Sarah Brown of Angola, IN and Elizabeth (Ben) Wall of Louisville,KY; nine great grandchildren and two great, great grandsons; special niece Dolores Schiller of Chicago, IL. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter Vicky Pifer; her sister Margaret Kimber; her brother Leonard Van Akin; her great granddaughter Lindsey Rockwell; her sons-in-laws Bill Pifer, Robert Heckman and Curt Knowles.

Memorials may be directed to the Maple Lawn Activities Fund.
