His early years were spent in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It was here, in his beloved Sierras, that he developed a life long deep love of the outdoors and of all living things.
He spent the summers of his junior and senior years working in the Sierras as a member of the Junior Conservation Corps. Bret was preceded in death by his father, Jay William Dattke; his sister, Roberta Cade; and his brothers, Rockland "Rocky", and Ricky Robertson.
Remembered eternally by his family, he is survived by his wife Sharonnetta R. "Shari" Dattke; mother, Patsy-Jean (Dattke) Coon; mother-in-law, LaVerna Halterman; beloved rescued dogs, Mohawk "Mo-mo", Gnat-man, and Oreo.
He is also survived by soul brothers, Sal Garcia, and Anthony Romanelli; brother-in-law, Pete Cade; aunt, Lois Hauck; aunt Victoria; and uncle, Fred Alcorn; and nephews, Richard Cade, and Aaron Alcorn.
Viewing will be held at The East County Mortuary, 374 N. Magnolia Ave, El Cajon, CA (http://eastcounty mortuary.com/) on Friday, January 9, 2015, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Internment to follow at the Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA at a later date.
