Shirley E. Karrer, 79, of Sioux City, formerly of Lawton, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Bickford Cottage under the care of hospice following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. today at Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton, with the Rev. Bruce Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.
Mrs. Karrer was born Aug. 3, 1925, in Sioux City, the daughter of Florence (Walden) Asay and Francis Asay. She was baptized at Knox Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. She attended school in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1943. She then worked as a stenographer at Iowa Public Service Co. for five years.
She married Theodore Karrer on Feb. 5, 1949, at Mayflower Congregational Church. They farmed near Sioux City for six years, then moved to Lawton where they farmed for 34 years. The couple retired from farming in 1989 and moved to the Morningside area of Sioux City.
They were active members of Bethel Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher for 13 years and shared her beautiful singing voice by performing solos and duets for weddings, funerals and as a faithful participant of the church choir. Her giving heart and caring ways were obvious in her active participation in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League (Ladies Aid) and the neighborhood ladies group named "The Willing Workers."
She also enjoyed canning, baking and photography. Her children and grandchildren will be forever grateful for her many wonderful recipes and for the beautiful photo albums that she complied for each and every member of her family.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Ronald and Julie of rural Lawton, Arthur and Brenda of Camarillo, Calif., and Dennis and Stacy of rural Lawton; a daughter and her husband, Sharon and Rob of Flagstaff, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, Dustin, Christine, Angelia, Andrea, Samuel, Adam, Theodore John "T.J.", Heather, Jamie, Zachary and Kyle; a brother-in-law and his wife, Harold and Ellen Karrer of rural Kingsley, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Odette Asay of Denver, Colo.; a bother-in-law, Addison Randall of Omaha; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Betty Randall; and a brother, Alvin Asay.
Pallbearers will be Angelia Karrer, Andrea Karrer, T.J. Karrer, Christine Karrer, Dustin Karrer, Sam Riffle and Adam Riffle.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
