David Daly Ford was born November 18, 1840 in Henry County, GA, to Perley Ford and Susannah Katherine Gallman. David probably grew up working for his father, Perley, who was a physician and may have operated a mill in Bibb County, GA (Macon region).
David was twenty years old when the War Between the States broke out. He and his brothers volunteered to fight for Georgia and Alabama. He joined the 18th Georgia Infantry Regiment, Company K on June 19, 1861, which was sent to Lee's Army in Virginia. He was wounded during the Seven Days Battle outside of Richmond, VA, June, 1862, as well as in the infamous "cornfield" at Antietam/Sharpsburg. David and about 150 other Georgians were captured in a gully by the Union's VI Corps, 1st Brigade, commanded by Colonel William S. Truex during the Second Battle of Cold Harbor (Gaines Mill), VA. He spent the remainder of the war in prison at Elmira, NY and took the Oath of Allegiance on 27 June, 1865. He was described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, had red hair and fair complexion.
David found his Georgia community in ruins, so he, his father and some other syblings moved to Morgan County, Alabama to start new lives. He married the girl next door, Sarah Richie, in 1867. They had the following children:

David went on to attend the 1912 Confederate Veterans Reunion in Little Rock, AR. His granddaughter, Lucille Ford, described him as "the prettiest old man I ever laid eyes on." She was six years old when David passed away on January 17, 1923.
