Mr. Ezra Brown was preceded in death by his sister, Sandrette Gray; nephew, Roger Williams, Jr.

Cause of Death...gunshot wound by his son

On Wednesday, Brown, now 18, was bound over to Genesee Circuit Court to stand trial on charges of first-degree murder, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, since Brown has a 2005 conviction for assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

In a preliminary examination for Brown before Judge Ramona Roberts, his brother, 21-year-old Ezra Brown Jr., testified he found his father on Dec. 24 after he'd received a phone call from his father's girlfriend, asking him to check on his dad.

Ezra Brown Jr. said he hadn't talked with his father for a couple of days. When he let himself into his father's house at 5916 Susan St., he found his dad dead; his brother Edris, who lived there, was gone and so was their father's truck.

Edris Brown's attorney, Charles Grossman, questioned whether the witness had ever seen their father acting violent toward Edris or anyone else, but Ezra Brown Jr. said he had not.

LeGardye testified that he and Sgt. Jowanne Carrigan, who is now retired, interviewed Edris Brown about 20 days after Ezra Brown's body was found. Initially, when Carrigan read him his rights, Edris Brown said that he didn't want to give up his right to talk to an attorney, so the detectives stopped their discussion and took the teen to the department's booking area, LeGardye said.

But while there, Brown said he decided to talk to the investigators, LeGardye testified. This time, the detective said, Edris Brown told them that the night he shot his father, he'd come home and gotten into a heated argument.

That's when Brown went to his room and got his 9 mm pistol, shooting his father in the living room of the house, LeGardye said. Later, the teenager told police, he threw the gun away. The weapon was never recovered.

Grossman questioned whether police knew if Brown was undergoing counseling or getting psychological help. The detective said he didn't know.

Brown faces a May 8 arraignment on the charges against him in Genesee County Circuit Court.
