Lewis Balch Dead.

News of the death of Lewis Balch, which occurred Tuesday morning, May 23rd, at 9:30 o'clock at his home on South Second Street, came as a distinct shock to the people of Dardanelle, many of whom did not know of his serious illness.

Mr. Balch suffered a severe attack of influenza about three months ago, from which he never fully recovered. Three weeks ago he suffered a relapse, from which time his condition slowly but steadily continued to grow worse until the end came Tuesday morning.

Lewis Balch was born about three miles west of Dardanelle on the Nebo road 47 years ago, and has spent practically his entire life here. He was a man universally respected for his splendid qualities and his untimely death has brought sadness to the hearts of all who knew him. He served several terms as City Marshall and Collector, and many terms as Night Marshall and no town ever had a more faithful or capable officer.

The funeral service, conducted by Rev. J. W. Campbell, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, was held at the family home at 10:00 o'clock yesterday morning, a large concourse of friends following the remains to Brearley Cemetery where interment was made.

Mr. Balch is survived by his aged mother and one sister, Mrs. A. C. Amrheim, of Little Rock, to whom we join in extending deepest sympathy in their great bereavement.
