Nellie Jane Pridmore was born at Stratford, Ontario, Canada, on October 8, 1877. She was the daughter of New York natives John Pridmore and Anna Kinney. John and Anna returned to the United States in 1882; they lived for a time in New York and then moved to Chicago.

Nellie worked as a school teacher in Chicago, which was also where she was married to James Ahern, who was a salesman for a Chicago company. They were married on August 16, 1904. Nellie and James lived for several years at Kankakee, Illinois, where their three children were born.

By 1910, they had moved to Wayne, Nebraska, where James was raised. They operated a general merchandise store in Wayne until 1947, when they moved to Florida. Nellie died at Hollywood, Florida, on May 30, 1955. Funeral services were held in Chicago, with interment at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Nellie was survived by her son John and two daughters, Margaret (Wertman) and Marian (Lippold); five grandchildren; and two sisters. James died on August 21, 1962.
