Albert was the son of Robert Sauer and Elizabeth "Bettie" Sherman. On 24 Jun 1896 he married Johanna C. Becker and they had four children: Carl, Raymond, Curtis and Albert. Early in his adult life he owned a grocery store. Later he was employed as a superintendent at the old J. Bacon & Sons department store. Albert died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 65.
