Sylvester was the second child of Hardy and Julia Ann Pattie Keeney. He was the namesake of his maternal grandfather, Sylvester Pattie.

Sylvester married Mary Jane Roberson/Robertson on January 18, 1848 in Osage County, Missouri. Mary Jane was the daughter of Jesse and Anne Doggett Roberson/Robertson. They were the parents of five children: Susan A., James Ohio, Mary Josephine, Hannah Matilda and Barbara J. Keeney.

Sylvester enlisted with Capt Reuben Sorrel's Company in Col Johnson's Regiment of the Missouri State Guard. He was captured by Maj Wright at the Henrytown / Wet Glaze River skirmish on 13 Oct 1861. Sylvester is one of the 58 prisoners held at Fort Wyman in Rolla on 30 November 1861 that were transferred to a POW camp in St Louis, Missouri on 1 December 1861.

Sylvester was paroled in February 1862. According to the parole document, he was too unwell at that time to sign his name. It is most likely that he died shortly after returning to his farm in Maries County, Missouri. No later records exist and his grave has not been located.

He may be buried with his mother, Julia Ann in Osage County, Missouri. Possibly the same cemetery just east of Richfountain that Sanford Backues was buried in due to the proximity of their farms and close association of the families.
